yuletide letter
Hello yuletide writer! Thanks for signing up to write one of my requests. I hope you have a wonderful yuletide and write something you enjoy - you don't have to incorporate everything or even most of what I talk about here, please find something that inspires you and write something you have a fun time making. My fic and bookmarks are here if you want to get a sense of things I enjoy. I also accept treats!
general interests
highly competent characters, especially if we get an insight into their internal world and how they drive themselves or if they are given situations to demonstrate that competence. extra especially when they are respected by other characters for their competence
polyamory, consensual non-monogamy and many different ways to love
established relationships, a strong foundation of love, enjoying a long basis of love
fantasy, sci-fi or speculative fiction, particular exploration of sci-fi, fantastical/magical or speculative elements
explicit sexy, especially kinky or very physical
slice of life that gets really into a character’s internal world and gives you insight into the wider "non-story" world or their day to day life
queer communities and being an embedded part of a community/circle of friends, found family, hard-won safety and community
sex that ~~~says something about the characters and how they relate to one another
mutual pining, miscommunication from repression
what if aus, magical aus (eg what if Justin could really talk to ghosts)
happy endings, hard-won happy endings, "unconventional" happy endings where characters stay true to themselves
Things I don't like/are less interested in
mundane (“set in the normal world”) AUs, AUs that move the characters to a new context (ie barbie movie but in space!)
characters dying/mourning each other
characters thinking of themselves/identifying as bottoms or tops
non-consensual infidelity (I am okay with characters realising they’re attracted to others and then talking about that with their partner, or negotiating polyamory, just not the classic “cheating, emotional fall out, argument etc etc” storyline)

fuck or die/biological imperative
rigid top/bottom roles
overt feminization
fear, making the other character afraid for sexy reasons
with my sex scenes, I don't need kink in-depth negotiated onscreen, especially since many of the pairings I'm requesting have a canonical established relationship. It's fine for characters to do fucking in a way that isn't explicitly negotiated because they both trust each other.
Left Hand of Darkness
The eternal book of my heart. I read Left Hand of Darkness at just the right formative time, and Genly and Estraven so imprinted in my heart. I love the richness of the world Le Guin creates in the story, and also how Genly tries over and over to penetrate that richness, yet keeps finding himself further and further on the outside. Every time he thinks he's figured out Gethen, he's confronted with the fact that he actually hasn't, that he's more of an alien than he thought. And it just keeps happening to him, in small and big ways, over and over! and yet, despite that alien-ness, despite that isolation and fear and separation, he still manages to reach out to others, to make this beautiful connection with Estraven. I'm most interested in their relationship, and would like you to either set the story during the book, or in a post-canon AU where Estraven is alive. Because I want to read about Genly and Estraven's future! I want them to confront all the ways they are alien to each other, and still find a way to reach across that divide and find love. I'd love to read Estaven's point of view, or more about their future. I'd love to read about Estraven finding out more about Earth and Genly's background, or even just more about their moments of love, the moments when they learn to pull together. I'd love to hear about Genly interacting with Estraven's family, whether that's Estraven's children, both of their body and not, or their parents, or their partner, or somehow working with Estraven to excavate and work through Estraven's painful history with his brother. All of it's good!
I am neutral on the pronouns you use for Gethens and Estraven. For me, Genly is inherently a non-objective narrator, and struggles to disintangle his existing view of gender from how he views Gethens, so his use of "he/him" for Gethens and particularly Estraven is, for me, more representative of his complex and flawed understanding of the new culture he's part of, rather than anti- they/them pronouns or neutral gender. Which, long-winded way of saying, go with what works for you and the story. Maybe Genly's pronoun use changes as he understands more of Estraven and Gethen, maybe it never does.
* Genly meeting Estraven's family, especially Estraven's children, or going with Estraven to Estre and reckoning with Estraven's painful history with his family and brother
* Estraven learning more about Earth and Genly's family and past, meeting Genly's Ekumen colleagues
* Genly continuning to learn more and yet never fully understanding Gethen
* Genly and Estraven travelling together, seeing more of Gethen
A Crown of Candy
God, a show that ripped my heart out! Made me laugh, made me cry, made me obsessed. I've requested Amethar, Theobald, Saccharina and Liam, but given you freedom over which (or all) of the characters you'd like to focus on, because I would be interested in anything on all four of them! I would really love something that explores their lives post-canon (for all of them) or pre-canon for Amethar and Theobald, since we really meet them after they've had long lives and establishing careers. I'm interested in the show's exploration of duty and obligation, of how Amethar is duty-bound to a role that he's uniquely badly suited for and which he hates, how Theobald is duty-bound to serve a King he knows is not good at being king and to train children that don't respect him or the sacrifices he's made for their family. Saccarina feels this duty to Candia, despite not really knowing it? Liam's duty brings him to a place of killing and violence that is clearly painful for him, and that he's not sure how to come back from. I've love an exploration of Amethar and Liam's sort of surrogate father relationship, or Theo and Liam (Theo clearly worries about Liam). I'd love to know more of what Liam does post-canon, or how Theo feels about serving a new queen in Saccharina. How do Saccharina and Amethar build a father/daughter relationship post-canon, and how do they deal with the pain of everything they've both sacrificed?
It's in my DNWs already, but my preference is for this to be set in the ACOC universe, rather than a "mundane" AU that takes them out of Calorum.
Sins of the Cities - Nate/Justin
I personally think that Nathaniel/Justin is one of KJ’s most underrated pairings. I am in love with the journey that Justin goes on, and how Nathanial is a key part of that journey but yet doesn’t make his affection contingent on Justin changing. I love how they both go on a really significant journey, learning more about themselves and each other, and how that helps love blossom between them. I would really love for the story to include a sex scene, if you’re so called, because their chemistry is so much a part of their relationship! Their chemistry helps them see the best in each other. I also love how Nathanial starts to see much more in Justin after seeing him with his children, how he can be loving and caring, and also that Justin starts to see more in Nathanial when he sees that he can be patient, that he can put the tools in Justin’s hands and let him wield them. I’d love a story that explores their future together, that shows them being domestic, that shows them raising children together. I'd love more of Justin's instinctual ruthlessness, how his circle of care is small and constrained and how he slowly extends that to Nate's friends and family. I want Nate being a father to Justin's family! I want them having mind-blowing sex, even as they get more comfortable and domestic!
Barbie Movie RPF
This is my rogue request this year but also: Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie have HUGE crushes on each other.
A sampling of interviews that have both of them in:
here
also here
and here
There are also a bunch of (much longer) interviews where Margot talks about how she only had one director in mind for the film (Greta) and Greta talks about how much she admires Margot and how fearless and amazing Margot was as a producer. They have big crushes on each other!
I am interested in them having an on-set romance, them having a lowkey romance as two famous people. I'd love for you to take on any classic fandom "speculative" aus, like soulmarks or dreamsharing or other "magical realism" elements. I'm interested in their mutual professional respect, how much Margot respects and admires Greta as a film-maker and Greta respect and admires Margot as an actor. Mutual admiration and pining maybe? (This letterboxd interview with Greta is great insight into Greta's film nerdiness). Maybe a "outside observe" fic where it's an interview of Greta and Margot interviewing together? Maybe it's snippets of media coverage? Maybe it's a future au of them making another moview together. Go wild! Margot and Greta fucking like bunnies in their trailers on the barbie movie set? Trying to pretend like they're not fucking like bunnies and everyone else on set thinking this is hilarious?
I included a DNW for outing or worrying about being out-ed. I'm fine for any storylines to include them being secretive because they're famous etc, but I'd prefer there to be limited or no focus on them needing to stay closeted or hide their sexuality. Also do feel free to either pretend existing partners don't exist or it be a polyamourous/non-monogamous situation, just no killing or hating on existing partners.
Barbie Movie
I enjoyed this so much and had such a lovely time seeing it with friends multiple times. It made me cry! I loved Barbie's painful realisation that this is no "way" to live right, there is only living! I thought her and Gloria's journey together was so lovely.
To brass tacks: I want Gloria and Barbie to fall in love and kiss and Gloria to realise she's a late in life lesbian and divorce her husband amicably and Barbia and Gloria to parent Sasha. I want Gloria to be part of Barbie adjusting to the real world and exploring the challenges of being a human, and Barbie to help Gloria return to joy and fun! The movie is a lot about finding yourself and realising you life you thought you wanted is actually constricting and painful and personally that is a very resonant queer metaphor, which I would like explored a bit more explicitly for Gloria and Barbie.
Doomsday Books - KJ Charles
I devoured both of these books this year and absolutely loved them. Joss/Gareth and Luke/Rufus are two great KJ pairings, and I'd love a fic that explores either pairing, especially post-canon or post each of their books. I was kind of sad we didn't get to see more or Joss or Gareth in Luke's book, so I'd love Joss and Gareth during Luke's book (what do they think about the mess Luke's got himself into? What do they think of Rufus?). I'd also love Luke taking Rufus over to a proper dinner at Gareth's, Rufus having to get used to Joss' particular way of approaching things and not respecting rank. Joss is such a great character, so arrogant (with justification!) and so head over heels for Gareth, so careful with his responsibilities and yet not able to be perfect (like everyone else!). I'd love Gareth and Joss after their book in the interregnum between the books, getting on with their unconventional life that works for them. I'd love the pairings interacting, but, as in my sign up, I would prefer any fic to include either of the pairing sets and then anyone else, ie Joss/Gareth and maybe also Luke, or Luke/Rufus and going to Gareth's for dinner, but not a fic that was, say, Rufus and Gareth hanging out with no Joss or Luke.
Thanks again and hope you have a wonderful yuletide!
