Magical Realism Fest!

 Hi everyone!

Since we're all back on dreamwidth, I've been craving an old-fashioned fest - I held one on my livejournal for bandom back in the day. (Here, a lot of the comments have been deleted but I have a lot of great memories of this fest.) I never loved the way that the production of ficlets, not!fic (I guess we call them headcanons now?) and other fandom ephemera moved to tumblr and became a one-way street from requester to creator via asks. I always loved the collaborative creation in comments, and fests were such a great place for that to happen. 

So: a fest! A Magical realism fest!

This is a really relaxed chance to people to make / suggest / chatfic out some stuff on the theme in the comments. I'll be writing ficlets for prompts to keep things moving. You can anon comment prompts, or share recs for any work on the theme!. 

I love magical realism. I love all the "established tropes" in it, like bodyswap, wingfic, dreamsharing etc, but I also love how people have explored it, with magical powers, or curses, or shapeshifting, whatever. I'm pretty relaxed about what I think is magical realism - anything that differs from reality in an unexpected way I think will fall into the theme. The beauty of magical realism is you don't need a lot of hard work in worldbuilding, it's just how things are! I'd love to see a diversity of interpretations of the theme, and diversity of fandom experiences. Let's go wild!

If you're stuck for prompts, I'd suggest trying a quick scroll on the magical realism bot or the Micro SF/F stories twitter. (Or do what I always do and find a good a asofter world)

FAQ

How do fests work?

They're relaxed places to make and rec fanworks on the theme. People leave prompts in comments, and get comments back on the prompt. 

Do I have to make new stuff?

Nope! If someone prompted "fic where all the colorado avalance are werewolves" I could be like "hey I wrote that already" and if someone prompted "a character turns into a tree", I could say "hey frecklebombfic made a great podfic for that!". 

Can I  make / write / podfic / chatfic / draw new stuff?

Of course! I'll be writing some ficlets. If you wanna do a quick one-take podfic recording, stick it on soundcloud and give us a link do it! If you wanna make a quick moodboard collage, do it!

What are the rules?

Please warn for the main archive warnings Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death, Rape/Non-Con and Underage. Also additionally warn for anything else you think is relevant. If someone asks you to warn for stuff, do it. No being an asshole or I will delete your comments.

I only like X fandom?

That's cool - you can prompt for specific fandoms! If you don't specify a fandom, people can respond with anything.
