#FicRecFebruary compilation week(ish) one

I'm trying to channel my sadness about twitter getting worse, and also the fact that I don't have strong fannish energy (this is because I've been homeless for three months, and am tired) into putting more content on mastodon so that people will feel more comfortable moving over there, (Try it out! It's basically just twitter! People making it seem more complicated are wrong!)

So, in that spirit, I started #FicRecFebruary which is just a hashtag fest thing on masto, and I'm posting one rec per day for all of Feb. I'm also compiling the recs in vaguely weekly-ish posts to have them all in one convenient place. If you are also unsure about how to start posting on masto, come and retweet my post about #FicRecFebruary and maybe tweet a rec of your own! No need to do every day of the month like me, even someone just adding one rec to the hashtag is awesome!

cut for the recs )

Yuletide Recs

I always love spelunking in the yuletide collection, and try and read as broadly and widely as I can, and did a lot of reccing at [twitter.com profile] quaiching and on mastodon. But I'm compiling them here, by fandom. There were some real gems in the collection this year, so hopefully if you missed them, this gives you some fun things to open in tabs. My categories are extremely scientific.

Wow!! This blew me away! )

Fun and enjoyable sweet canon moments or additions )

Sexy!! )

I don't know what category to put these in but you should still read them )

Yuletide Recs Part 1

My quick and dirty Yuletide recs! I'm not all the way thought my tabs yet but this is to get me started

Other Beginnings - Portrait of a Lady on Fire - daemon au. feels like watching a new version of the film all over again. painful, poignant and beautiful

jette-toi dans la mer - Portrait of a Lady on Fire - lovely short fic from Heloise's POV

Aere Perennius - Eagle of the Ninth - they're in love and they fuck!!

A Long Way Back To The Light - God's Own Country - Gheorghe's pov on the film, him and johnny fucking and falling in love and him coming home to Johnny

Accept a Double - Society of Gentlemen, Will/Jon/Cyprian, sexy threesome with double penetration!!

Ashen-tree, Ashen-tree - Simon Feximal, Simon/Robert, casefic with ghost possession sex!! and Jo & Sam & Simon & Robert found family!

Of Scars and of Wounds in the Heart - Spectred Isle - Max/Barney tentacle sex!! and sweet conversation! the fic I've wanted for these guys since the book came out tbh

I spent the last week reading this

I have never actually watched Downton Abbey on purpose because the ~~cultural phenomenon in the UK was maximally annoying and also I think our fetish for pre-war upstairs downstairs culture is BAD

however someone on my TL recced this and I fancied 500k+ of escapism and figured I knew enough from osmosis to roughly know what was going on, and then I didn't surface from reading this Thomas/OMC series for like, four days.

I know so little about Downton I was picturing an entirely different person as Lady Sybil the entire time, but I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series. +500k! historical queer journeys! all of the stupid things that happen in the show (no I haven't watched it but you couldn't live here and not know what was going on) get resolved in sensible ways!

It encompasses the whole of WW1 (as per the timeline of the show) and so is obviously extremely sad in parts, but the author is good at warnings and it has an overall happy ending. If you need to forget yourself in a fic, this did it for me.

content I've been consuming

music

H.E.R.'s 2017 eponymous album
really good, sexy, R&B (highlight songs: Hopes Up, 2, Focus)

Transgender Dysphoria Blues - Against Me!
fast-paced angry punk rock, an album I've had on repeat to get through a very stressful week (highlight songs: True Trans Soul Rebel, FUCKMYLIFE666, Paralytic States)

comics

Exorcism Academy
SEXY DEMONS. SEXY DEMON MAGIC SCHOOL.
Ethan is an exorcist in training, Al is his demon (kidnapped for demon-fighting purposes), they fall in love and get it on.
I nominated this for yuletide and am going to request it because I desperately need more content, and I'm promo-ing it like crazy, because I need people to get into the sexy demons so they can understand how good they are.

fic
Four Letter Word For Intercourse
I spent a week reading this nearly 200k Supernatural au fic where Dean is a mature student at college and Castiel is a phone sex operator and they have like 200k words of phone sex. Is it good? Sort of, but it's so engaging I read the whole thing basically without stopping.

sixthlight's The Old Guard Arranged Marriage AU
Do you want to read a hilarious, sexy and sweet fic set in a loosely historical past where Nicky and Joe get arranged marriage? Yes, because these fics are amazing. Probably best described A Romp. Kind of like if the Princess Bride was about the old guard.

nothing here that is not sacred
demisexual Yusuf has some ~realisations about his feelings for Nicky. emotional! sexy! they have such good conversations!

to be known
KJ Charles' A Society of Gentleman and Band Sinister cross over! Contains a Richard coming out to his family scene that made me EMOTIONAL and a VERY SEXY Dom/Silas + John Raven scene, and just, this whole thing is great, enjoy.

books

Altered Straits by Kevin Martens Wong
Singaporean sci-fi, set both in dystopian 2047 Singapore, and an alternate dimension Singapore in 1947. Yeah, a lot happens in this. Has a central queer romance, which I am enjoying, but is very Tragic (because of the dystopia and brain-eating aliens, and potentially Future Homophobia, unclear). Also So Much is happening a lot of the characters feel very undeveloped but I want to read whatever future stuff Martens Wong writes because the Concepts are great. semi-enjoying
Black Leopard Red Wolf by Marlon James
Cannot tell if I am enjoying this because it is written in a deliberate style that makes it feel like your brain is being turned inside out. I suppose once you win the Booker you can do what you want. Very "fantasy written by a literary writer" as opposed to "fantasy by a fantasy writer". I probably won't read the next two in the trilogy because this book is already too long and makes my head hurt too much. It's very interesting, and I have stretches of really enjoying it, and then long stretches of just thinking "what the fuck is happening".

Thursday Recs

My grabbag of recent reads that I enjoyed. Anyone read something they liked recently?

Discworld

short street to kicklebury by [archiveofourown.org profile] notbecauseofvictories
One of my fave fics of all time, a Rule 63 Discworld au, Sybil/Vimes, includes a handful of lines that I think were actually written by Pratchett himself.

The Old Guard

Islands of Hours by [archiveofourown.org profile] RC_McLachlan
This has some great dialogue, includes the amazing line "You acted like your precious God and I were in cahoots, deliberately keeping the wonders of sodomy a secret from you."

The Gold of Your Body by [archiveofourown.org profile] azephirin
some great of the "Joe and Nicky fuck through the ages" genre, includes Nicky being into pain and being whipped.

Hockey

How the Future Knew by [archiveofourown.org profile] canary
I stayed up to 3am reading this. It's nominally about Nolan having an onlyfans, but is more about coming to terms with your life and your queerness and finding love. Really lovely and sweet. Has a couple arguments that feel so real and painful but good.

little bit of pain never hurt nobody by [archiveofourown.org profile] arzoensis
Adam Lowry/Brandon Tanev (the jets that kissed) spanking, sweet and funny

the rain that will strengthen by [archiveofourown.org profile] growlery
A really lovely domestic but painful fic about when you're getting help and comfort from your friends and how that can be good and also painful.

Marvel

New Skies, New Stars by [archiveofourown.org profile] snickfic
A fic about Loki & Valkyrie getting married to break a chastity spell on Loki, but also kinda emotional? Really enjoyable, and good Val and Loki feels.

Black Sails

devoted by [archiveofourown.org profile] Fyre
Miranda pov about her affair with James and Thomas being into that before he'd made his move.

strange pairs by [archiveofourown.org profile] MildredMost
spoilery Thomas/Flint reuniting, very sweet

Thursday Recs

please pretend like it hasn't been a solid 7 months since I made a post in these trying times

I've been rereading in a bunch of old fandoms, mostly because my brain cannot take the cognitive load of finding new fics in new fandoms (please link me to your favorite Witcher fics) so:

The World Well Lost by [archiveofourown.org profile] oliviacirce
A Society of Gentleman Ash/Francis fic, follows them roughly through the plot of the three main books. Hot, sweet, sexy, Ash is spot on, Francis is great. Lovely.

The Right Direction (is everything) by [archiveofourown.org profile] shaenie
White Collar fic where Neal wants Peter to top him but also won't tell him that. Didn't love the wierd possessiveness with Sara, but Pete talking through the "problem" of Neal with Elizabeth was pitch perfect.

From Sweet Fellowship Comes Nectar by [archiveofourown.org profile] jacquez
Lord of the Rings Gimli/Legolas where elf gender and dwarf gender isn't like human gender and Legolas and Gimli are in love but also have to navigate the cross-cultural communication of their relationship. Very very good, I reread this all the time

Numberless the ways, and imperceptible by [archiveofourown.org profile] jacquez
Lord of the Rings Gimli/Legolas - this is really great, basically it's pining but Legolas doesn't know he's pining, he feels the feelings of pining but he doesn't know that's what he's doing. Stands up to being re-read a lot, since a lot of the comedy is blink and you'll miss it, and when you reread it it's hilarious. It's also really beautiful and lovely.

Thursday Recs

Only one rec today, but it's a doozy. If you like hockey and you haven't read it yet honestly run don't walk.

Say When by [archiveofourown.org profile] dadvans
Andy shrugged. “It’s not that. And you should stay. But we should talk. Sid and I—”
It was him saying 'Sid and I' that did it. Andy said 'Sid and I', and it didn’t just dawn on Nate that Andy and Sid were fucking: moreso the realization slammed into him like a truck doing one-twenty down the highway.
“You’re fucking,” he said, like an idiot.
“Yeah, I mean, we’re married, so,” Andy replied. “I guess, yeah. We’re fucking.”

This fic is really really good on lots of levels, like hot and funny and lived-in, but the part that really nailed me, and I think makes it so good, is that Nate's internal POV voice is so good, and so well-done. He's temperamental, and moody, desperate to prove himself, stubborn, but also hard-working and competitive. He comes off so completely honestly, and his internal voice just absolutely killed me. A great piece of writing.

Thursday Recs

It was my birthday last week, so all my recs this week are things I got for my birthday. I felt very well-loved and it made my birthday pretty great. (Also the stuff people made was amazing and you should check it out regardless of them being gifts for me)

[Podfic] talking to strangers (no stranger than you) by frecklebombfic
DS9 podfic where Julian relises Garak has been secretly Cardassian flirting with him all this time. Sweet and tone perfect

Runaway Impulses by frecklebombfic
Based on a prompt frecklebomb saw about hiccuping being cured by sex, and Mitch gets hiccups and hijinks ensure. The comic timing in this is perfect.

[Podfic] familiar work of art by momo
The avs get Nate a cardboard cutout of Sid as a joke and it's funny and sweet. Nate's internal voice is great in this.

[podfic] play with fire till your fingers burn by growlery
TK/Patty and them being in love but not knowing it!!! so sweet!!! Patty's voice is perfect in this and growlery does a few neat soundeffect things.

<3 Happy birthday me

Thursday Recs

I've been on my semi-regular reread of Stargate Atlantis classics. I only really know the classics, because I got into the fandom like, 6 years too late for anyone to still be writing in it, so here are some new recs of old fics!

Healing Station Argh
This fic is a little silly in that the team finds out Ronan used to be an actor on the Pegasus galaxy version of Grey's Anatomy, but then it becomes an actually lovely story about poly and dildos. Also has several humorous space euphemisms for being queer.

War Bride
John takes Rodney home to meet his brother and Rodney is everything John needs and it's sweet and lovely and also about the pain of your family not knowing you.

Friendly
This is a really lovely but often painful fic about queer community when you can't be out, and looking out for each other, and John finding community after a long time of isolation, despite sad and difficult circumstances. It's fics like these that remind you so much of how even fandom was different not that long ago, and the how these fics have aged as time has passed.

Team Dynamics
Team poly fic! John is emotionally repressed and the rest of the team wait for him! Sweet and lovely and great

Term of Service
In many ways, a relic of when "slavefic" was a Fandom Thing, and definitely shows its age in that way, but also a clever spin on the tropes, and thoughtful about the consequences for the characters, but from Rodney's perspective, who has the emotional insight of a whelk.

Written By The Victors
THE classic Atlantis fic. Written as "found" history, interspersed with actual writing. Leaves a lot unsaid, but obviously very good and well remembered for a reason. also the fic number (the /# in the url) is FIFTEEN. we're all the crypt keepers.

Retrograde
A very very epic series! I love this and reread it all the time, is about trust and community, and integrates with the greater SGA universe, and changes POV a lot, and it's one of those really rare fics that is just a great and gripping adventure story. Wish I could read more scifi novels by this person tbh.

Sheppard's Law
Love this one, where Rodney travels back in time to save John's life over and over. Fun and funny and the buildup at the end is so good, when John reveals he's been waiting for Rodney to catch up! The time-traveller's wife before it got written, and with less German poetry.

Thursday Recs

Fic

What To Do After Firing - Sister Mary Loquacious raising the Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness. Good Omens, very funny and on tone.

You're the best thing I've seen - very sweet Poly Willy and his multiple boyfriends, and Willy's stress about his boyfriend's new boyfriend

Podfic

you're the best thing I've ever seen - growlery gets the humour and sweetness just right in this, each of Willy's internal thoughts is so pitch perfect. funny and sweet and with a great cover

Threshold - dumb4dumb4dumb Mitch and Dylan edge Connor until he cries, and Dylan's internal world is so deliciously stupid and perfect.

Art

Waiting Game. - Sid/Geno sexy magic tattoo werewolves!

Reccing Thursday

I'm committing myself to doing Reccing Thursdays because 1) I miss reccing, 2) I'm terrible at finding new fic, and maybe if more people do Reccing Thursdays I'll find some new stuff!!

5 Times Matt Cullen Came Out by downjune
I don't even really care about the penguins that much, but this was a really well done story of coming out, especially as someone who's older, who has the complication of a family. It's painful, but good, and realistic, and I liked it a lot

we've got each other (and that's a lot) by lotts
A really really lovely coming out story, about Mitch deciding to come out, about how sometimes that's just as painful as being in the closet, about the weirdness of telling people, about the joy and pain of seeing your friends in love. It's good.

I Fly To You Much The Wiser by silkstocking
Funny and sweet and warm fic about goalie nesting and goalie magic and the Stars' Russians having sex.

Reccing Thursdays

Went through my recent AO3 history to find some good fics to rec:

red light green light by theundiagnosable - sweet fic where Auston and Mitch negotiate some kinks and figure out Auston is into Mitch telling him what to do

rule number one by littleconnections - Jt Compher/Tyson Jost fic where Josty thinks they are having sex because ~bros and Kerfoot has to tell him that having sex 9+ times means it is probably not just bros anymore.

I reread magic in the midnight sun recently, which is a really lovely Sid/Geno magic in the NHL au that I think everyone should read. Such a great build.

a self rec: I wrote some oviposition eggpreg porn about Dylan and Connor for a sinbin prompt. It was pretty fun. check it out here

Snowflake Challenge Days 1 & 2

I'm doign the snowflake challenge this year, to try and keep me posting and also 'cause I've enjoyed it in the past. Doing two days at once because if I get much further behind I'll forget!

Day 1 - In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

Hm, this is a tricky one. I guess the most obvious is curled up in bed, with the boyfriend, reading or chatficcing on my phone, or watching a movie. I like the feeling of being alone in a completely clean flat just after I finished cleaning it. I like libraries and bookstores and museums. I miss my old student's union, where I spent at least five days a week for four years. I miss the library where I wrote my dissertation, which was always warm and empty aside from me and bff, and had comfy chairs and power outlets. The debating chamber at the students union is one of my happy places - I rarely felt as at home or as at peace or as among friends as I have felt standing at the dispatch box, or sitting on the bench eating popcorn and heckling my friends. The sandwich resteraunt in Glasgow, now closed, which was me and boyfriends' favorite place to eat. The bedroom in boyfriend & I's old flat, where the bed was in a nook and felt safe and hidden. My current living room when it's full of friends and I'm sitting on the floor watching my friends talk, or shout at each other about the board games we're playing. My childhood bedroom, looking at the moon out the windows in the ceiling, listening to the snow fall off the roof. The top of the hill behind my parents house where they walked the dog, where it's always eerily whistling as the wind goes through the electricity cables, and you can see the cairngorms. My grandparents living room, looking at the birds in the bird feeder out the window. Victoria Park in the summer, when the grass is yellow. Skating when I've got all my gear on, when I feel invincible, even if I can't turn or score yet. Looking out the window of the train north from Glasgow, when you see the sea for the first time. The drive on the slug road from aberdeen, when you come over the hill and see stonehaven harbour for the first time.

Day 2 - Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

an ever-fixed mark by AMarguerite (including all extras and alternate endings)
this is a pride & prejudice soulmark au and take my word for it when I say you HAVE to read this. it's satisfying and funny and smart, a well thought out au, an engaging period piece, and just an engaging, loving, beautiful piece of fiction. read it!!

out of the dead land by emilyenrose
i re-read this periodically, for being one of those Perfect Fics. Emotional, tightly plotted, rewarding, funny, devastating, and completely un-put-downable. it's captain america/mcu where the winter soldier has no more mission, and then decides the best way forward is to go to steve and pretend that he remembers being bucky/is recovered, and then the plot and story unfolds from there. killer.

when you lay me down you'll bury only bones podfic by growlery
this is such a lovely, perfect podfic that takes the emotions of the fic and dials it up to eleven with growlery's perfect delivery. it's welcome to night vale, and you should listen to it.

private show podfic by momo
i listen to this ALL THE TIME such that i now reread the text of private show in momo's vioce. the podfic makes the fic itself feel so real and immersive, momo's use of sound effects are really effective at creating the feeling that sid & geno have a complete and lively virtual life/digital relationship, by filling the fic with the sounds of life we're all familiar with being online. her delivery is killer and makes every scene of this fic that was already my favorite into even more my favorite!!

Yuletide Recs pt1

I was really nerdy and went though all the yuletide fandoms and dumped all the fandoms I wanted to read in into a trello board, and then have used that to keep track of which fics I read that I wanted to rec. I'm about halfway through, so here's the ones I've got through so far and wanted to rec. Here they are, divided by fandom. When I have time ( ?o? ) I'm going to go through and leave comments on each of these but being on holiday etc has really cut into my time.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street
a passion for a flight of thunderbolts
I really really liked this. It focuses on Grace& Akira, who usually aren't the fandom focus, but I really liked those characters in the book, and I think this captures both of them very well: Akira's introspection, his playfulness, his sensation of being stuck between worlds and nations, and Grace's kind of cruel, literal nature, but also her sympathetic-ness, her magnetism. Grace travels with Akira to Japan and solves the problem of the tilting castle, and meets Akira's family. If you liked the book, try this out!

a hundred visions and revisions
This is a really sweet slice of life for Thanial and Keita, with some really sweet notes, like Keita never seeing a world in which Thanial voluntarily leaves him, Six's Japanese lessons, Keita and Thanial learning to live together with Keita's powers.

Deep Space Nine / Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown
Parts Unknown: Bajor
I actually got recced this, and I'm really glad I tried it out. It's short, but it's done in the classic style of Parts Unknown's openings, so if you've seen the show it will instantly feel like you've been transported to a world where Bourdain went to Bajor, and is visiting it with his typical direct but compassionate style. Love <3

God's Own Country
Nice and Quiet
I loved God's Own Country so much, and was lucky enough to get two gifts for it last year, so I fell on this right away. It's a slice of life kind of deal post-film, but Gheorghe and Johnny's fondness and love are so great in this, and their interactions so honest. Has a nice hot sexy moment, and some sweet cuddling, and good family feels.

American Gods
Wishes
This is a slight AU for the Jinn/Salim, where the Jinn doesn't leave in the morning. Hot, sweet, true to tone, makes me feel a lot of feelings. Works whether you've seen the show or read the book.

Road to El Dorado
Set Sail
Miguel/Tulio/Chel, G rated, they get accused of being pirates, usual hijinks occurs, Chel rescues her idiot boyfriends. Cute, funny, loved it.

Eagle of the Ninth
Four Seasons
Sweet, G rated fic about Esca & Marcus starting their farm together through the seasons, and falling in love, and learning about each other. Just the right kind of sweet/loyal/IN LOVE this pairing deserves and needs.

Venom
warm bodies
Eddie & Venom go shopping for cat toys for Venom to use, and also ARE IN LOVE and talk to each other about bed sharing. The venom voice is very funny.

weird porn stage
Venom sees hentai in Eddie's memories and then fulfills those fantasies. Consentacles! exactly what it says on the tin but great because of that.

The New Weird
Venom and Eddie FALL IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER and "learn what symbiosis means to them" ;_______; also includes Eddie referring to Venom as his emotional support parasite. I loved this.

Let me know if you've made any rec posts, or if there's anything you read that you loved (or if you also liked these)

quick and dirty yuletide recs

I have approximately 4000 tabs open of yuletide fics I'm going to work through but I wanted to post some early recs if people are looking for links!

I got three absolutely amazing gifts, and I managed to finish one not-a-gift-for-me fic that I loved so

My gifts

we'll make a brand new start of it (in old new york) (Worth It) *siren emoji* This is not a drill!! Steven/Andrew fake dating!! This was so sweet and funny, and had so much of Andrew and Steven's great banter. Andrew has a few lines that feel absolutely pitch perfect for him, that sly sarcastic sweet humour. and their fondness for each other just SHINES THROUGH. Also it works food and food themes through the fic (in a good way! in a way that makes sense and is emotionally great!) and then the sex is perfect and very them. I loved this.

russian roulette croquembouche (Worth It) Andrew/Steven getting together fic set during the holiday special! featuring Annie and Adam being THE BEST and Rie being PERFECT PERFECT!! Andrew's fondness and pining for steven just bursts from the page, and them having their friends with them is so lovely, and each moment of this is *chef kiss*

so tied together (A Matter of Oaths) This made me want to immediately scurry off and reread the book, which, tbh, there is no higher praise. It's future fic where Rallya reveals the "twist" from the end of the book to Rafe, and then his reaction and discussing it with Joshim. Rallya is pitch perfect - smart, scheming, stubborn, really really funny, and the Rafe/Joshim is really heartbreakingly lovely. Read this!!

Not my gift:

like real people do (Colorado Avalance/ Hockey RPF) This is a mythology/demigods au where Tyson feels he is being called back to the sea, and Gabe is a norse demigod and there's pining, and lots of hilarious little details, like Mikko the wolfperson, and Josty being human and needing protecting, and Nate the human with a little twist at the end (the twist is great I won't give it away!). Give this a try if you like mythology AUs, you don't need any canon and it's really fun.

I'm gonna make a longer yuletide rec list once I've worked through the Tabs of Doom, and I think I'll do a post with a few of my old yuletide favorites, if I can find enough of them. Hope yuletide / itpe / the holidays / tuesday were good to you!

email newsletters

I'm subscribed to a lot of email newsletters. I think I use them to fill the void others fill with podcasts. I'm not really a podcast person, though I try! It takes forever for them to get to the point, and I always find myself tuning it out and then realising I have and getting frustrated rewinding and relistening to the same bit over and over again. I'd just always rather listen to music.

So, I'm subscribed to a lot of newsletters, and use filters to put all of them in folders out of my inbox and read them on the tube and when I'm procrastinating at work - I liked getting cool stuff to read delivered right to me, and not having to filter through anything. So I'm reccing the ones I really getting in my inbox!

Does anyone have any newsletters they get that they'd recommend?  I read totally anything, from art, fandom stuff, writing, news. I really like seeing what people do with the newsletter format, so I'll try anything!

Anne Helen Petersen

 - Petersen is a news reporter for Buzzfeed news in the US, and this is her semi-weekly newsletter of her thoughts on the stories she's been working on, recent events, and stuff she's read that week. I like Petersen's reporting - it's not perfect, and I think she sometimes leans too much into "isn't this community ~different and special" but she's obviously talented, and has a background in media studies/celebrity studies which is sometimes a really interesting perspective on the news. One of her newsletters I really liked was a reaction to the profile of goop/gweneth paltrow that was going around that explained the mechanics of how celebrity profiles get made, how negotiations for reporter access to celebrities work and it was really fascinating.

Data is Plural
- I got recommended this by a friend when I started doing more data science work, and learning R. I'm still obviously very very unskilled in coding, since I'm busy and also...am lazy, but it's cool to see the different data sets that have been collected, and think about work that could be done with that data. Every week the newsletter sends you three publicly accessible data sets, and links to any data science/statistics work that's been done with them, and it's a really cool resource.

Infodump
- I actually have no idea how I originally subscribed to this, because I care exactly 0% about the guy who writes it (He's a tv/radio writer? I don' think I've ever knowingly consumed anything he's written). However, the newsletter isn't really about his writing, it's more about the mechanical, technical elements of his process, like what apps does he use, what notebooks, how does he brainstorm ideas etc. It's really nice for getting suggested new apps to try out, and think about the more practical "how" of writing. I've got some good recs out of this!

Lara Olin
- I also have no memory of how I subscribed to this, because I'm extremely unclear on what Lara Olin actually does, for like, her job, but the newsletter isn't about her, it's just a list of cool stuff she's seen that week. Usually a couple articles, but also cool videos, and a gif she likes, and good poems she's read. The poems especially are usually killer, but she's got a good eye for kinda off the way but neat things. I also like it cause it comes on a Thursday and for some reason most newsletters come on a Friday.

Pome
- This sends a short poem to your inbox every day. I really like it, but this one you definitely have to be ruthless about filtering this because it comes every day, and you'll get overwhelmed if you don't. There's a real mix of different kind of poetry, and it's pretty awesome to have a folder in my email just full of nice poems I can read any time.

The Rec Center
- I mean, probably a lot of you are subscribed to this. It's a weekly email with fic recs, and also links to some articles about fandom in the news/meta etc. I don't necessarily think it's the greatest - I think the whole point of recs is that you trust the person, and that's why you check it out, and the email just compiles the recs that hello-tailor and elizabeth minkel get submitted to them, so the stuff that gets recced isn't always the greatest. Plus sometimes gav & elizabeth just go on and on about whatever they're doing and...I don't care. The six months when they were obsessed with black sails was Mighty Boring. However, it's nice to get new fannish stuff every week, and they do different themes all the time which is cool, and I read my first ever hockey fic based off getting linked to it in the rec center so....complaining from me is a bit rich. and the fanart is always cool, and it's really sweet to read people's descriptions of why they liked a fic.

New Statesman Morning Call
- This is one of my few pure news emails, but it's truly one of the best ones I get. It comes daily monday-friday but it's short - just a couple of paragraphs from Stephen Bush, one of the best political reporters in the UK, on the most recent happenings in UK politics. He's excellent at explaining the "tactics" of politics, like what incentives are causing people to act the way they are. Really demystifies a lot of the current news, which is good since the current news is literally the worst thing ever.

Rec me some emails!! I need more!!

Holiday Recs!

I never post here any more because a) I'm super busy with uni and a million other things, b) twitter is my fandom place and it seems silly to be posting about nonsense when I'm just tweeting about it already. but it's holiday season and there's fannish exchanges and things have been happening so here are some recs from the holiday exchange season, mostly just bandom_hols and yuletide, although I might throw in a few things I've read recently that need reccing.

you are what you love )

IT'S TIME TO CELEBRATE

Rec Post!

EXAMS ARE DONE.

...

EXAMS ARE DONE.

I don't think I failed and I hope I got all the points I need. I doubt I met my predicted scores, which were ridiculously high, but I did well enough (I think) which is all I wanted. I'm just so glad it's over.and to celebrate, I have made a rec post!

My ways of dealing with stress mostly involve reading fic, 'cause it gets me out of my brain and calms me when I start panicking, so I went through a lot of fic over the exam session and I've posted a selection of my favorites here. They're mostly newish, apart from a couple that I saw linked on my twitter feed. I also mainlined [personal profile] littlemousling , [personal profile] inlovewithnight and [personal profile] lalejandra 's back catalogues.

Seperated by fandom, with writer summaries and my notes. Read warnings on the actual fic.

"yes, yes, go, go, live a little"

I said on twitter I was going to make this post after I finished this week and its awful round of exams but I call bullshit. I've given up even thinking about revising for my math paper tomorrow. What's gonna happen is gonna happen and I'm just going to have to suck it up.

Last week I went away on a school trip with the Spanish department. Since we had four airports and three flights (to get to Spain guys. Scotland is not that far from Spain. and yet.) I decided I should try out this new-fangled podfic thing. I tweeted asking people for recs and masterlist and [livejournal.com profile] isweedan helped me out. This is what happened.

conclusion: podfic is awesome )
